The Arkoma Mustangs football team has started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2021. Head Coach Kathen Funburg, now in his second year at the helm, has led the team to this impressive start. The Mustangs are driven by a strong group of seniors, as well as a good batch of underclassmen.

The Arkoma Mustangs will face the Bowlegs Bison, who are 2-0, on September 20, 2024. Arkoma recently defeated Graham/Dustin 52-6, showcasing a strong rushing game with over 235 rushing yards in three consecutive matchups.

Bowlegs, coming off a 48-30 win against Life Christian Academy, ended a three-game home drought.

In their last meeting in September 2021, Arkoma shut out the Bison. Given Arkoma’s undefeated streak and dominant rushing game, they might have the edge, but Bowlegs’ recent form and home advantage could make it a close contest. Expect it to be a high-scoring affair, regardless.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM @ Bowlegs. The over two hour trip will lead the Mustangs south of I-40 to take on the Bisons. The weather is calling for mostly sunny skies with a high of 96 with winds light and variable while dropping down to 73 and a few clouds from time to time.

Bowlegs Football Team Off to a Strong Start

The Bowlegs football team has kicked off the season with a 2-0 record, thanks to the players’ preparation and hard work. “The kids’ preparation and hard work have been crucial to our 2-0 start,” said Coach Sullivan. Despite some sloppy play, their dedication has been key to their early success.

The team’s success has been a collective effort. Colton Sullivan has been a standout on offense, rushing for over 100 yards in each game and being a threat in the backfield. “Colton Sullivan’s performance has been outstanding, both on the ground and catching out of the backfield,” noted Coach Sullivan. QB Hudson Jasna has shown resilience, making crucial plays, while WR Caleb Harjo has been a reliable target. On defense, tackles Ty Benefield and Aidan Prentice have dominated, and the secondary has already recorded six interceptions.

Coach Sullivan emphasizes the importance of film work and focused practice sessions to prepare for tough opponents like Arkoma. The team’s morale is high, with the largest roster in years, and they are committed to improving in areas like ball security, drive blocking, and tackling.

Fan support has been crucial, and Coach Sullivan encourages continued loud and proud backing. “Fan support has been incredible, and we need it to continue as we strive to be the best team we can be,” emphasized Coach Sullivan. The team’s goals include making the playoffs, winning the division, and advancing deep into the postseason, aiming to achieve feats not seen in over 20 years.
