Wesley Toney’s Big Day Propels Howe Varsity Lions Past Battiest Varsity Panthers

Wesley Toney collected three hits in four at bats, as Howe Varsity Lions defeated Battiest Varsity Panthers 11-3 on Tuesday. Toney hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning, doubled in the fifth inning, and singled in the first inning.

Howe Varsity Lions got on the board in the top of the first inning after Battiest Varsity Panthers committed an error, and Cole Wann walked, each scoring one run.

Howe Varsity Lions added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Shayne Mead singled, and Battiest Varsity Panthers committed an error, each scoring one run.

Howe Varsity Lions added one run in the third. Andruw Covey singled, making the score 5-0.

Howe Varsity Lions scored one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left field by Toney.

Battiest Varsity Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run to center field by Nacho Nash.

Garrett Smith earned the win for Howe Varsity Lions. The pitcher allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking one. Nash took the loss for Battiest Varsity Panthers. The starter went four and one-third innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on 13 hits, striking out eight and walking one. Reece Harrison threw one and one-third innings of shutout ball for Howe Varsity Lions in relief. The reliever allowed zero hits, striking out one and walking one.

Howe Varsity Lions amassed 15 hits in the game. Covey set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading Howe Varsity Lions with four hits in five at bats. Howe Varsity Lions stole four bases in the game. Howe Varsity Lions turned one double play in the game.

Nash provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Battiest Varsity Panthers with three runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Nash and Kasen Smalling each collected two hits for Battiest Varsity Panthers. Korian Hurd stole two bases. Battiest Varsity Panthers stole four bases in the game.
